The Bug Ladies (and more!)

The Bug Ladies is a Red Bubble store created by myself and Annika Salzberg. Our goal is to bring insects to the world of art. We hope to create artistic renditions of insects that are important but often not represented in art. We donate 50% of all our profit to the Xerces Society for Insect Conservation. Through diversity we flourish

Annika Salzberg and Hayley Schroeder (aka The Bug Ladies)

November 2020

We are so grateful to have had the chance to bring some native insects to the South Hill rec trail! Every bug you see in our mural is native and local to the Ithaca area. As entomologists, we strive to connect people to the natural world through art and education alike. Often the smallest things can go unnoticed - and when we are unaware of the creatures we share this planet with, we won’t notice when they disappear. Insects populations are declining at alarming rates around the world due to human forces such as climate change, and if we do not take action at a large scale, many of the insects in this mural may not be around much longer. The world suffers and our very survival is threatened with the loss of biodiversity. The messages on this fence are those of racial justice and unity, and we have added our message of environmental justice as well, because one cannot be achieved without the other. Environmentalism will achieve nothing without intersectionality.

Dragonfly Life Cycle at the Ithaca Sciencenter

September 2021

This mural was a part of a community mural project at the Sciencenter in Ithaca, NY. Community members voted on their favorite mural proposals and Annika and I were lucky enough to have ours chosen. Collectively, these murals aim to educate and inspire wonder in all those who visit this beloved museum.

I designed a lab logo for my PhD lab (The Poveda Lab), bringing together how the composition and configuration of our landscapes affects the broad diversity of insects inhabiting these landscapes.
